For years, researchers have been exploring a remarkable marine ingredient: the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), prized for its Omega-3 content and natural compounds that help support healthy joints.

A staple of traditional Māori cuisine, it is now backed by a growing body of clinical research in both people and dogs, with findings suggesting support for joint comfort, mobility and cartilage health.

Where the New Zealand green lipped mussel comes from

Hands holding fresh New Zealand green-lipped mussels, a natural Omega-3-rich ingredient used to support dogs' joint health.

The green-lipped mussel is native to the clean waters of New Zealand, raised with care for the environment and local tradition. Mussels grow on long floating lines, feeding only on phytoplankton, without added feed or industrial inputs during farming, which supports purity and traceability. Since 2004, production has been managed through quotas to protect stocks and support sustainable aquaculture.

    What makes it unique

Green-lipped mussel oil is especially notable for:

    • An exceptionally high Omega-3 content (EPA, DHA and ETA) with well-documented anti-inflammatory benefits.
    • Rare compounds such as furan fatty acids, known for powerful antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects that can exceed those of EPA.
    • Natural antioxidants such as xanthophyll carotenoids, which help shield cells from oxidative stress.

Green lipped mussel powder vs oil: what's the difference?

    • Green-lipped mussel powder is made by drying and grinding the mussel. It retains proteins and glycosaminoglycans, but much of its Omega-3 content can be lost because these fatty acids are vulnerable to heat and oxidation.
    • Green-lipped mussel oil is extracted with supercritical CO₂, delivering up to 15 times more Omega-3 and reaching peak blood levels six times faster than powder. Because the oil contains no protein, it may also be easier to tolerate for sensitive dogs.

In practice, green-lipped mussel oil is more concentrated and rapidly absorbed than powder, and is easy to administer in small daily amounts.

Green Lipped Mussel Oil vs Powder

Why green lipped mussel oil is researched for joint health

Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes pain, stiffness and cartilage breakdown. Research suggests green-lipped mussel oil may help in several ways:

    Natural support for inflammatory pathways

Research in Inflammopharmacology (1997) and Food Science and Biotechnology (2017) found that green-lipped mussel oil lowers several inflammatory mediators linked to joint pain, including:

    • lower PGE2, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels,
    • inhibition of key inflammatory pathways, including COX, 5-LOX, NF-κB and MAPK,
    • reduced activation of pro-inflammatory macrophages.

These mechanisms matter in veterinary care because they overlap with pathways targeted by anti-inflammatories commonly used to manage canine osteoarthritis.

Unique marine lipids with antioxidant benefits

Research published in PNAS (2011) identified specific compounds called furan fatty acids (F-acids) found naturally in the New Zealand green-lipped mussel. Scientists found that these lipids have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, with greater efficacy than EPA in some experimental arthritis models.

These compounds may help curb oxidative stress and free radicals linked to chronic inflammation and gradual damage to joint tissue.

Potential protection for cartilage and joint tissue

A 2021 study in Bone Reports found that green-lipped mussel oil may help:

    • slow the activity of cells that break down bone and cartilage,
    • lower biomarkers tied to joint damage,
    • and support a healthier inflammatory balance in joint tissue.

Together, these laboratory findings help explain why veterinary trials often report better mobility, joint comfort and movement in arthritic dogs given green-lipped mussel oil.

How green lipped mussel oil works
    • Lowers inflammatory mediators linked to joint pain
    • Inhibits several key inflammatory pathways
    • Strong antioxidant activity to help reduce oxidative stress
    • Bioactive marine lipids with unique anti-inflammatory properties
    • Supports cartilage and joint tissue
    • Helps modulate cells involved in bone and joint breakdown

What veterinary studies say about green lipped mussel oil and dog joints

Research on green-lipped mussel oil has accelerated in recent years, reinforcing its key role in supporting mobility and joint comfort in dogs. Early results were encouraging; newer, more rigorous controlled trials now offer clearer evidence of benefits for osteoarthritis and other joint issues.

Green lipped mussel oil delivers a clear clinical improvement in pain and joint function in dogs, with no side effects observed.

Visible clinical improvements in arthritic dogs — often within weeks

A 2024 study in the Journal of Veterinary Clinics tested green-lipped mussel oil in 15 dogs with osteoarthritis.

After 4 weeks of supplementation, researchers reported:

    • a significant drop in pain scores,
    • better mobility,
    • and improved weight-bearing on the affected leg.

Outcomes were assessed with standard veterinary tools: the CBPI (Canine Brief Pain Inventory), the OAS (Orthopedic Assessment Score) and gait analysis using Peak Vertical Force (PVF).

Benefits were especially clear in dogs with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. No notable side effects were reported during the trial.

A 2012 study in the Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine looked at green-lipped mussel oil in 84 dogs with osteoarthritis or degenerative spinal conditions.

After several weeks of supplementation, researchers found:

    • clearer clinical signs in most dogs,
    • less lameness and improved mobility,
    • plus strong owner satisfaction with their dog's comfort.

For dogs with hip or shoulder osteoarthritis:

    • over 90% showed clinical improvement in lameness,
    • and nearly 87% of owners noticed a visible difference.

Notably, some dogs improved clinically even when X-rays showed little change, suggesting that benefits for pain and joint function can appear before imaging detects structural changes.

Better mobility in active working dogs

A 2024 study in the New Zealand Veterinary Journal tested green-lipped mussel oil in 32 working dogs with musculoskeletal issues. This double-blind, placebo-controlled trial tracked activity with collar-mounted accelerometers.

    Researchers found:

    • a significant rise in high-intensity activity among supplemented dogs,
    • better locomotor performance,
    • and an improved ability to keep up sustained effort.

The authors suggest that green-lipped mussel extract may be a promising nutritional option for supporting joint comfort and mobility in dogs with mild to moderate musculoskeletal pain.

    Results comparable to NSAID anti-inflammatories

A 2019 study in BMC Veterinary Research tested green-lipped mussel oil in 79 dogs with hip or elbow osteoarthritis. Three groups were compared: green-lipped mussel oil alone, firocoxib (an NSAID) alone, and both combined.

    After 4 weeks, researchers reported:

    • significant gains in weight-bearing and movement across all three groups,
    • lower pain scores on the CBPI (Canine Brief Pain Inventory),
    • with the strongest outcomes in the green-lipped mussel oil plus firocoxib group.

The combined group also showed a significant drop in inflammatory markers (PGE2), pointing to an additional anti-inflammatory benefit from the green-lipped mussel.

Unlike the NSAID-only group, dogs receiving green-lipped mussel oil alone showed no rise in kidney markers, indicating good supplement tolerance.

A 2016 study in the Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine compared green-lipped mussel oil with carprofen (an NSAID) in 40 dogs with hip or elbow osteoarthritis.

After 4 weeks of treatment, researchers found:

    • a significant mobility boost in dogs given green-lipped mussel oil,
    • lower orthopedic pain and lameness scores,
    • and better weight-bearing on the affected leg on gait analysis (Peak Vertical Force, PVF).

The best outcomes came from combining green-lipped mussel oil + carprofen, suggesting that green-lipped mussel oil works well alongside conventional anti-inflammatories.

Outperforms fish oil in head-to-head trials

A 2015 study in the Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine compared green-lipped mussel oil with fish oil in 66 dogs with hip and/or shoulder osteoarthritis.

In dogs supplemented with green-lipped mussel oil, researchers observed:

    • a significant improvement in lameness and mobility within just two weeks,
    • a better weight-bearing on the affected limb measured by Peak Vertical Force (PVF),
    • along with improved joint range of motion (ROM).

The study also found lower levels of the joint biomarker WF6, which is linked to cartilage breakdown, suggesting that osteoarthritis progression may slow.

After 24 weeks, the green-lipped mussel oil group significantly outperformed fish oil alone, with no notable side effects reported during the study.
